Hawker's Cuisine - Northbridge

It's the smell of a place that sets up the memories and makes it special and there's nothing quite the same as the smell of a Sambal sauce on a hot summer night in a steamy back alley. Thats the smell of hawker centres in Singapore and for me it's not led me wrong when looking for authentic cuisine.

Hawkers Cuisine in Northbridge has been mentioned on dozens of blogs and for some time now has become the go-to place for authentic south-east Asian food for Ondine and I. Their turnover is prodigious and the queue is 10-20 people deep most nights. The d├ęcor is nothing special, but the food is fresh, and fantastic. They also have the closest thing I've found to real pulled coffee in Perth.

I haven't eaten Sambal here but the smell of it coming out of the kitchen frankly scares me. It's incredibly pungent and looks hot - maybe next time when I'm feeling brave. In the mean time there are dozens of other menu items worth trying.

The Abominable Marmite Pork Ribs

They have a lot of oddballs on the menu that would freak out a lot of westerners. Marmite Pork Ribs for example is not the first thing that springs to mind when you go out for "Chinese". It works though and is highly recommended. The mustard and mayonnaise version though is particularly scary - yet addictive.

Chicken Rice here is something you have to get in early before they run out. It's not Singaporean style, but the rice is good. They have a wonderful salted chilli squid tentacles and as I recently discovered their Egg Fu Yung is the Atkins equivalent of "Special Fried Rice" with an extra serving of awesome for the protein fiends out there.

Egg Fu Yung

Ondine is a big fan of their minced pork tofu and I hate to say it but I have to agree. Their in-house made tofu dishes here are actually really good. It must be something to do with the fresh coriander and chilli in everything.

Tofu, done right.

So there you have it. Cheap, great tasting food open till late that's spot on for South-East Asian hawker fare right in the middle of town. Highly recommended.
